You Must Ask Yourselves, Why?

Yes, Yankee fans. I, too, was puzzled in seeing that the Yankees had dismissed Jeff Marquez and Wilson Betemit for Nick Swisher. The man who stated “We were going to spend” has gone out and gotten a cheap first baseman. The stats he puts up are like a worse Jason Giambi: Bad average, good power, high on-base percentage. He could actually be useful in a platoon. He can play the outfield as well, though, so that separates him from Giambi. A first-base-outfield platoon, yeah… But you must remember that Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Teixeira, and other options were out there as well.

My question stands, why? And I send advice to Brian Cashman: Go out and get another first baseman.

I’m Back!

Hello readers (insert sarcasm), sorry I was gone for a while there. First on our agenda, we have my assessment (I think that’s spelled wrong) of the All Star Game. What a contest! Unusually good defense. Derek Jeter said it best when he simply stated, “The Stadium just didn’t want to let go.” One question: How many of the esteemed predictors, the “experts”, the senior advisors who make the smart predictions, or the average Joes who make brash, crazy predictions for shock value, would have seen in their crystal ball that J.D. Drew, in a Red Sox uniform, the one who was booed in his home park in his first season, would be cheered at Yankee Stadium in the All Star Game for game-tying two run homer late in the game? Out of all those categories, I bet the number of people who could have seen that coming is zero. Zip. Nada. Goose Egg. Nil. But it went and happened anyway. And that later, he would win the ASG MVP? 15 innings of close calls, surprise heroes (Aaron Cook, Drew, Miguel Tejada, George Sherrill, Evan Longoria) and surprise goats (mostly Dan Uggla, but some Ervin Santana). Ah, Uggla. Unless you are a baseball fan and you were trapped under a rock or in a coma until this moment, you probably know about his errors, so I won’t cover that. The use of all the players was interesting, but luckily it ended in time so we didn’t have to turn to Drew and David Wright to pitch. But you guys have all heard about the All Star Game, so let’s hear about me! Just kidding. That would be an immensely boring story involving, well, nothing of interest to you. Anyway, I ask you, MLBlog nation, to feel free to leave comments, and tell me, what do you make of the signing of Richie Sexson? I think it may work. Jason Giambi versus right handers plus Richie Sexson versus lefties adds up to this: a .285 average and 18 homers with 50 RBIs in 239 at bats, about half a full season. That projects to a .285-36 homer-100 RBI full season. If they platoon and produce at the same rate for a full year, it’s like signing Lance Berkman with a lower batting average. So I just convinced myself it was a good move. By the way, it’s 7-1 Yanks, so unless they collapse (don’t count that out), Moose will go to 12-6, further proving my point that he should have been an All Star.

Sooo… yeah.

I’m disappointed to tell all you Yankee fans
that Evan Longoria, that pesky Rays third baseman, has beaten
our mustachioed first sacker in the AL final vote, and
speaking of that position, Richie Sexson has gone from hero
to zero in two years. He was released today by the Mariners.
In 2005, he hit .263 with 39 homers, winning the AL’s
Comeback Player of the Year Award. The next year, he hit .264
with 34 homers and seemed to be a key part of a young
Mariners team that was ready to compete with the big dogs.
The next year, as the rest of the team rose, he hit an anemic
.205 with 21 dingers, and of course this year the M’s dropped
straight to the bottom of the standings, with him hitting
.218 with 10 homers. The way I see it, now he has two
options: he could end up being a good pinch hitting option
(of course, being on the bench doesn’t suit him, that’s why
they cut ties with him) for a contender, or he could sign
with a lower level team and be the DH who plays maybe 100
games a year. Or retire. But I doubt it. He’s still got some
pop, a few towering shots left in him. What do you
think?

It’s Been Fun, Rays.

I really like the way the Yankees have played the last two days vs. the Rays, and I know I sound like a broken record, but we played like the last Yankees dynasty in this series and gained two games on a first-place team. Excellent. Today both Ponson and Edwin Jackson started shaky, but they both stabilized and had great starts. Then we got to the Rays’ soft underbelly, their bullpen. For a few innings, it was all pitching, but then Bobby Abreu’s RBI double in the 10th won it, our second 2-1 walkoff in 5 days.

Sights from one we needed:

Support The ‘Stache!

He may not have the best stats out there, but Jason Giambi should be an All-Star. Why? Partly because he’s a Yankee and it’s the last All Star Game in the Stadium. But also because Jason Varitek, who nearly won the start, is taking up a roster spot with a .218 average. Which brings me to another point. The All Star Game is such a popularity contest! David Ortiz won by a long shot with a .252 average. Carlos Guillen is hitting .286 with 8 home runs, not his best year ever. Joe Crede has 15 homers, but the guy is hitting .261. One thing I am happy about is Carlos Quentin making it, even if he did drop off. Giambi has more home runs than all of the aforementioned non-All-Stars. He has a higher average than the two Red Sox who made it in landslides. Therefore, support the ‘stache, as I said before. If only there were some way to get Mike Mussina in. The Moose got snubbed, plain and simple. Terry Francona had best have been staying up to make up an excuse for that. Anyway, nothing I can do about it, so I won’t dwell on the fact that a Yankee pitcher having a great season got snubbed from being on the staff in the last Yankee Stadium Midsummer Classic. VOTE GIAMBI.
